I feel like the question of whether it was worthwhile remains because the people around you have a tendency to neglect the truth when it does not exactly comply with once they once thought. Take Plato's allegory of the cave. When the prisoner returns to the cave after seeing the light, the other prisoners would most likely think of the other prisoner as corrupt and persecute them.
